Steam Gallopers: A Fairground Classic

Regarded as one of the best vintage fairground rides in the country, and one of a handful that can still be steam powered.

The Ride That Started Our Business Over 30 Years Ago - And Is Still at the Heart of Our Fair!

A fine example of an English Galloper, not to be confused with a continental ‘carousel’ or a ‘merry-go-round’ which revolve in the opposite direction to a true Galloper. This ride is undoubtedly the centrepiece of a traditional fair, the most quintessential English fairground ride.

The Origins of Galloper Rides

Galloper rides were first built in the 1880’s, to enable working people to experience the thrill of riding a horse (a priviledge reserved for the upper classes) surrounded by the decorative grandeur only seen in stately homes and worlds away from the very basic existence of the majority of the population.

The early history of our ride isn’t entirely clear; however it is thought to have been built in 1903 and supplied to Ted Fear of Bristol. The ride was sold to Richard Townsend in1918. Sold again in 1927 to James Dewhurst, its use was discontinued in the mid 1950’s.

Restoration and Revival

The remains of the ride were purchased by James Horton in 1985 and a complete rebuild was carried out over a five-year period with the ride first operating again in 1990. Since then many further embellishments have been added bringing it up to the standard to be seen today. Learn more about our restoration process.

A Spectacle of Artistry

Well over 2000 lights bring another dimension of beauty to the ride at nightfall. Horton’s Steam Gallopers stand out amongst similar such ride due to the highly ornate nature of the ride together with decoration of the highest standard, including fully hand painted decoration, brilliant cut mirrors and shinning twisted brass rods. The ride is completed with its wonderful 89 key Marenghi organ, one of the very finest still in commercial use

Our Steam Gallopers also retain an original steam engine in the centre of the ride which can still be used to power the ride just as it would have done in the early 1900’s.

Anna Kent

We recently hired your beautiful Coconut Shy for a commercial photo shoot. James and his team have been a real pleasure to work with, especially helpful and accommodating.
I wouldn't hesitate to work with them again or recommend them to anyone looking to hire beautiful vintage amusements.

David & Bridget Shepley-Cuthbert

We cannot thank you, Antony and the team for your contribution to our 40th evening and the 'Yellow Perils' 100th birthday. Most guests jaws dropped as they turned into the field. The Galloper looked magic on Saturday evening as the light faded. It gave so much joy and fun to so many. Those little cars were heaven for small children who I gather were glued to them. The Hook-a-Duck and Coconut shy each gave pleasure to all ages. A big thank you for making my mad dream of a cars birthday party come true for all ages.

Littlehampton Town Council

Thank you so much for being a part of the "Littlehampton 150th" event. The day was a success and your involvement invaluable.

Lyndsay Ridley - English Heritage

The Gallopers were beautiful and even our director commented that it made the event! Thank you ever so much.
Also, your team were great and really good with the public. A big thumbs up all round!

Robyn Paiba, Art Director

As a busy art director in film and television I am always relieved to meet suppliers who not only meet your needs but surpass them.
James and the team at Horton's were a true pleasure to work with. Their patience and good humour when responding to any demand made the job run smoothly.
They supply a wonderful product and a reliable, efficient, affordable service.

Victoria Cushing

I just wanted to write to say thank you so much for bringing the Gallopers to our wedding.
I can honestly say it made the wedding.
