The Arrival of the Skid in Britain
The Skid was first introduced into Britain in the late 1920s from Germany. Soon British manufacturers were building their own versions of this popular ride.
How the Skid Differs from the Waltzer
Many people will confuse the Skid with the Waltzer, it is quite different, the platform that the cars run on is flat and riders can control the ‘Swing’ of the cars by means of a foot pedal.
There are very few ‘Skids’ left operating today; Horton’s are delighted to be custodians of this stunning example. Built in 1965 by Hayes Fabrication in the UK. The Skid was operated by Tom Smith, before being packed away in his yard for many years.
The Skid’s Journey Through Time
This traditional fairground ride was rescued from Smith's yard by Gerry Cottle who used the ride for a short period. After a spell with a couple of other owners the ride was purchased by the famous 'Carters Steam Fair’. During their ownership the ride was completely rebuilt. The decoration of the ride which was originally carried out by the most celebrated of fairground painters, Fred Fowle, was faithfully recreated using the same techniques that he used
The Skid joined our fair in the autumn of 2024.
