The History of The Big Wheel
Horton’s Steam Fair’s Big Wheel was built by ‘Eli Bridge’ of America in 1948. After being imported into this country and operated by various owners throughout the years it finally came into our ownership in the early part of 2024.
Restoration and Revival
We have completed the restoration that was majorly carried out by the previous owner, who had been thoroughly working on the ride for several years. Since our ownership, with the help of a master fairground artist, hand painted decoration to the highest standard adorns the ride. Learn more about our restoration process.
Horton's Big Wheel is lit by almost 2000 lights at night making quite a spectacle.

This iconic fairground ride, the beacon of the fairground, has been in existence since the early 20th century.
12 cars hang from the circular structure taking riders 50 feet into the air!
The owner of the American bridge building company ‘Eli Bridge’ saw the original enormous ‘Ferris’ Wheel at the 1893 Worlds Fair in Chicago. He was so taken by the idea he set about building his own smaller version which was completed in 1900. This completely changed the direction of his business, manufacturing many Big Wheels. The ride has been a fairground favourite ever since.
The Eli Bridge company is still going strong, indeed Horton's ride has recently been equipped with a brand new set of 'Cars' supplied by them. Whilst other manufacturers built Big Wheels, Eli Bridge were the predominant manufacturer.
